Kim Novak’s Beginnings
Kim Novak was born Marilyn Pauline Novak on February 13, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.
Her parents, Joseph and Blanche Novak, were of Czech descent. Kim’s father worked as a history teacher and transit clerk. Her mother was a factory worker and teacher.
Kim had one older sister named Arlene Malbourg.
Apparently Kim didn’t get along with teachers. She didn’t like being told what to do.
The Novak family moved frequently during Kim’s childhood and as a result she attended several schools before graduating from Farragut High School in her original home of Chicago.
Kim was a shy, introverted child who enjoyed reading and playing with dolls, as well as, a keen interest in painting and drawing.
In fact, she had such talent she won several awards for her artwork at local fairs in the surrounding Chicago area.
The Novaks lived mostly in small towns throughout Illinois so, Kim spent a lot of time exploring the outdoors. Her art was often inspired by the natural beauty around her.
Novak is still living (aged 90) and has spent much of her time painting in Oregon and California.

Kim Novak’s Teen Years & Discovery
As she entered her teenage years, Kim’s interests shifted to the performing arts. She started taking dance lessons at a local studio.
Kim’s passion for painting and drawing never left her. She remained an avid painter and art collector throughout her Hollywood career.
In fact, Kim once said that painting was her “first love,” and that her art was a way for her to express herself that was different from acting.
After high school, Kim enrolled at Wright Junior College, where she studied art.
She then won a $400 scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
As a young 18 and 19 year old student, Kim worked odd jobs as an elevator operator, sales clerk, and a dental assistant, but always came back to modeling.
Then, while on the road as a spokesperson for an appliance company, Kim decided to pursue modeling in Los Angeles.
This is where Kim was discovered by a talent agent and signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and changed her name to Kim Novak.
**My personal opinion is this; the studios would have insisted she change her name since her original name was Marilyn. The illustrious Marilyn Monroe was in the full blush of her career in the early 1950s. Keeping the name ‘Marilyn’ wouldn’t do.**

Kim Novak had a long career in Hollywood, spanning over three decades. She appeared in over 40 movies.
